Church Service, Charges Served, Affiliated Locations, and Other Biographical Information Born a slave, property of Bennett Russel. Remained on farm until leaving for Pennsylvania in 1862. She & members of her family, had been willed to Jesssie, son of Bennet Russel, moving to his farm one day & left the next day. As Gen. Lee's army headed north, the family moved north to Greencastle & then to Harrisburg. Rebel army went into Penn. & invaded town. Her children (and others) were taken from them to be sent south into slavery, but were rescued & returned. Difficult to get food & shelter as farmers were afraid to help and her husband was away at war. Second husband took her money & left. Her son, Rev. Thomas W. Cooper graduated from Hampton Institute & now teaches school in Maryland. She moved to Berlin, Md with son who joined Delaware Conference. She was member of St. Paul's M.E. Church, Berin, Md.
Family and Other Information Parents: Thomas & Rachel Swann Spouse: Henry Cooper md 1850 (he died in army in New Orleans in 1865. 2nd spouse: Obediah Farmer in 1870. He deserted her & her infant daughter. Her son, Thomas W. Copper was away at school at time. She had 3 children: Thomas W. & Franklin Cooper & Mary Ellen Farmer; only Thomas survives her.
