This abstract includes individuals who died within one year prior to June 1st of the decennial U.S. census in Caroline County, Maryland from 1850 to 1880. These schedules may be the only record of a person’s death as many states did not begin to record deaths until the late 19th or early 20th centuries. The 1850 and 1860 mortality censuses record the decedent’s name, age, sex, color (black, white, mulatto), whether married or widowed, place of birth, occupation, month of death, cause of death, and the number of days sick. The 1870 and 1880 mortality schedules include the above information plus the decedent’s parents' birthplaces. This source only presents data for those identified as "Black" or "Mulatto" and was taken from the book: Caroline County: Marriages-Birth-Deaths 1850 - 1880 by F. Edward Wright. Census records are preserved at the National Archives and Records Administration, which makes digitized copies of the censuses available through digitization partners. These partners include FamilySearch and HeritageQuest (accessible with most local library cards directly from website; for example, see Wicomico Public Libraries' database listings).
