Brownsville, an estate just east of Nassawadox in Northampton County on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, was owned by the Upshur family for many centuries and now stands as the headquarters to The Nature Conservancy's Virginia Volgenau Coastal Reserve. Generations of Black individuals were enslaved by the Upshur family, who recorded the names, mothers, and birthdates of the enslaved individuals in a ledger. The ledger, transcribed here, is now part of the Upshur Family Papers at the College of William Mary Special Collections Research Center (Mss. 66 Up. 8).
