Abstract

The Doris Dukes papers document her family’s history in and around Snow Hill, Md. through family bible records, death records, correspondence, and photographs. The materials date from 1912-2007 with the bulk of the material dating from 1967-2001. Her life as a waterman and restaurateur is also documented through business records.

Biographical History

Doris Jenny Mills Dukes (1911-2010) was born in Pocomoke, Maryland. She was one of ten children by James and Zenie Brittingham Mills. She was married three times to Jessie Mason, Chester Jones, and William A. Dukes. She had two daughters, Norma Lee Tull and Jenny Dukes Hall. William and Doris worked as watermen and owned Harbor Inn, a restaurant in Snow Hill, and Dukes Seafood in Public Landing, which closed in the mid-1980s.
