Message Abstract | States that a colored man named [[underlined]] John H. Butler, [[/underlined]] representing himself as an agent of the Bureau, promised the colored people of that place that if they would secure the ground, the Bureau would furnish material for school-house to the amount of $300; that he feels interested in the improvement of these people and desires definite information as to how the Bureau will aid them, and upon what conditions; that the colored people fear Butler is an imposter. |
Message Body | A gentleman by the name of Jno H Butler visited our Colored people some days ago, representing himself as Agt for the Freedman's Bureau, sent out to aid & encourage that portion of our people, in their efforts to educate themselves. He stated to [[strikethrough]] our portion of that people [[/strikethrough]] them that if they would secure the ground, the Bureau would furnish them with lumber & material to the Amt of $300.00, for house Having interested myself somewhat in their efforts to improve themselves I ask you to [[strikethrough]] know [[/strikethrough]] learn definitely what can be relied upon. The lot can be procured by Jan next & perhaps sooner. They have gone to work. They are feeble, but they are willing to work & do all they can. Please inform me what you can do, if anything, and upon what condition. The people fear lest Mr Jno H Butler is no agent of yours. They have been imposed upon once or twice Write me. |
