A League is Born
After World War I, American players were happy to be off the battlefield and back on the baseball field. In 1921, the first World Series was broadcast on the radio, the same year the Chicago White Sox made headlines after eight players were banned from baseball for fixing the 1919 World Series. Locally, the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce initiated the formation of a Class D minor league on the Eastern Shore.
While numerous semi-professional leagues came and went after the turn of the century, Delmarva finally got its first professional baseball league in 1922 with the creation of the Eastern Shore League.
The Class D Eastern Shore League brought professional baseball to Delmarva over the course of three decades. Baseball was a community event that often included bands, parades, and double-headers. Men, women, and children looked forward to a day at the ballpark to root for their favorite team and players.
