Red Scare
After World War II, Americans increasingly lived in fear of communism. A series of events, including the Soviet Union’s successful testing of an atomic bomb, the Chinese Communist formation of the People’s Republic of China, and North Korea’s invasion of South Korea, generated fear of a world communist plot.
This poster, created in 1954 by the United States Information Agency (USIA) for international distribution, was designed to heighten fear of communism in a newly divided Vietnam. The poster reads “Anywhere there is communism, there is terrorism and assassination.”
