Steamboat Wharf Desk

NABB_CENTER_DESK (1 of 7).jpg

Steamboat Wharf Desk, c. 1890-1900.

This oak desk was used by H. Fillmore Bounds at the Mt. Vernon steamboat wharf in Princess Anne, Maryland, during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Mr. Bounds was a “purser,” responsible for keeping track of the accounts. The desktop was mounted in the corner of his office until the wharf ceased to operate. Bounds retired and took the desktop with him. He had a base added so it could be used at home. After Bounds died, the desktop was moved into a shed until the 1970s when it was refinished by the family and used as a storage desk. The desk was donated to the Nabb Research Center by H. Fillmore Bounds’ great grandson, Marion C. Dryden.
