Converted at campground when slave in 1834. Worked to paid money to purchase self; master died without signing freedom papers & bound again to slavery. Mounted auction block in Princess Anne; with aid of sympathizing white friends bid himself in. Had small lot of land, cabin, wife & little children. Wife & children put up for sale & tried to buy them, raised $1200 but 2 children were sold south just as Civil War came. Admitted in old John Wesley (now Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia) in 1864. Served 32 yrs; 11 yrs as superannuate.
